New events are announced for festival

Plans for Chingawassa Days 2005 promises to include new and unique events, including a country-rock singer as the main attraction.

Gene Winkler, steering committee chairman, reported Monday to Marion City Commission that a male country-rock singer had verbally consented to perform June 4. Since the committee had not yet received a signed contract, Winkler did not announce the entertainer's name.

"We're trying to attract the 20 to 30-year-olds," Winkler said. He said the committee hopes the Saturday night performer will accomplish that.

New events being planned include a Fear Factor-type competition Friday (June 3), and motorcycle poker run and Texas Hold'em Poker tournament on Saturday. The group is working with a sponsor for the poker tournament, Winkler said.

"Last year, rain around the Marion area kept some people from coming," Winkler said. He added the festival "broke even."

A special celebration is being planned for 2006, Winkler said, when the festival celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Past "big name" performers are 38 Special, Little River Band, Three Dog Night, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Kentucky Headhunters, and Ozark Mountain Daredevils.
