New Hampshire couple walks American Discovery Trail

Peter and Joyce Cottrell of Whitefield, N.H., are aspiring to walk across the continent from the East Coast to the West.

They camped Sunday night at Roy and Judy Houdyshell's farmstead seven miles northeast of Marion on U.S.-56/77.

The couple is taking part in the American Discovery Trail, also known as Route 66 of American Recreation, the nation's first coast-to-coast recreational trail.

They started out in Delaware and will end in California.

"We will be the first to walk it the entire way providing, of course, we make it," Joyce said.

They will winter in Colorado before continuing on.

Judy said they were excited to discover they were camped on a National Register historical site. The Houdyshell farm home was built in approximately 1897 and has been registered since 1994.

The Cottrells told the Houdyshells they had been told to skip Kansas as "there's nothing there," but are discovering it's been one of their favorite places.

"There's a lot more history here than we thought," they said.

They also enjoyed traveling through the Flint Hills.

A map of the American Discovery Trail can be found on the Internet. Judy said the Cottrells are following it to the letter.

They were on their way to McPherson Monday morning.
