New hospital logo chosen by board

Staff reporter

A logo was chosen Thursday by the board of directors of Hospital District No. 1 during its regular monthly meeting.

Out of 46 entries, Daniel Mikolajcak of Lincolnville submitted the winning entry.

In other business, Doug Newman, chief executive officer, reported there are some anticipated changes in fire regulation.

Locks on doors of patients' rooms will need to be replaced and a sprinkler system will need to be installed throughout the facility.

Newman anticipates these mandates by 2006-07.

The board approved a 60-month financing option for the new computer and networking system. The agreement will be with Citi-Capital at a rate of 3.45 percent for the 60-month period.

Newman said he will continue to work with the physicians regarding a survey.

At last month's meeting, Don Hodson and Ruth Reed of Marion Family Physicians requested financial assistance in sending a survey to residents within the hospital district.

The purchase of a Cub Cadet lawn mower with snow blower was approved. The equipment will be purchased from American Lawn and Leisure of Topeka for $4,706.

The price includes $500 deducted for trading in the old mower, which is more than 20 years old.

The board had considered a zero-turning radius mower. Kevin Cronkleton, chief financial officer, made the presentation and said a zero- turning radius mower was not an option with a snow blower attachment.

In other business:

— Auditors Scott Loyd and Jan Nolte of Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk, and Loyd presented their findings for 2003.

The purpose of the audit, Loyd said, is to look at internal controls. He reviewed concerns noted in last year's audit and updated board on the status.

A recommendation of updating the bookkeeping system was noted last year and this year. However, with the upcoming changes, updating the software may not be done.

— John Harris a representative from the auditing firm of Baird, Kuntz, and Dobson met the board.

Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk and Loyd does not conduct audits for hospitals. Once the transition is made, another auditing firm will be hired to provide this service.

Harris said his firm works with 10 critical access hospitals and 30 nursing homes. They have been hospital and nursing home auditors for more than 20 years.

— The board approved the treasurer's report from Greg Bowers. Income for February totaled $27,000 with expenses of $5,455. Year-to-date income is $301,223 with expenses of $8,270.

Total cash and bank account balance is $386,107 with $886,000 in CDs. Encumbered funds total $421,632.

— The foundation has $510,000 in the money market account and $544 in checking.

— The hospital auxiliary board has a balance in its general fund of $966, a balance of $6,262 in its special account, and a balance of $7,129 in the checking account.

The next board meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. April 8 in the clinic basement.
