Nominations needed for athletes
After a lot of thought, a little persuasion, and a great deal of encouragement from folks in Marion County, the Marion County Record in conjunction with the Hillsboro Star-Journal and the Peabody-Gazette Bulletin, will take on the task of constructing the first and only list of the county's top 100 athletes of all time.
It appears the idea of recognizing the top athletes in Marion County is something our readers and this sports editor are anxious to see come together. So beginning sometime in September, we will begin our tribute to the top 100 Marion County athletes of all-time.
I'd like to thank the many individuals who took the time to encourage us to pursue such a daunting task.
And here's where you, the reader, come in. We need your help.
Naturally, we've already started constructing a list of top 100 nominees. At this point, we have 57 names, and we haven't formally asked you submit names, until now.
In the lower right corner of this page is our official nomination entry form. Again, if it's easier to e-mail or call, our e-mail address and phone number are below.
Here's what's important:
n We need the athlete's name, the Marion County high school they attended, and the year, they attended their respective school.
n If you want to add additional comments, biographical information, or general information about the athlete, we would appreciate it, but it's not necessary for a nomination.
n Nominate any athlete you feel is a great athlete. Your nomination is an opinion, much like our eventual list will be, so there are silly nominations. The only bad nomination is an unsent nomination.
n The cutoff date for all nomination, is Aug. 31.
After we have collected the nomineesn names, our panel of sport representatives, will dictate the top 100 athletes.
Again, this list will be subjective, and will cover all the schools in the Marion County area.
And, as one of our readers pointed out, this list should and will also include high schools in Marion County that no longer exist because of conglomerative school systems.
Reach back into the archives, pull out your old scrap book, and prepare yourself for what already appears to be a highly competitive list of athletes.
Remember, if an athlete doesn't appear on our preliminary list it will be impossible for them to be considered in the top 100.
So it's up to you. So nominate your list of athletes today.
