Numbers low, spirits high at bike rally

The crowd number was low but enthusiasm and appreciation ran high at the second annual KVC Motorcycle Ride for Kids Saturday in Marion Central Park.

Rose Vinduska, of KVC and organizer of the event, said 30 motorcyclists participated in the event with around 100 people in the park during the event.

"We were expecting up to 200 motorcyclists," said Vinduska. The cool, rainy April day discouraged many from riding and participating.

"We had groups from Kansas City, Salina, and Hesston planning to attend this," Vinduska said.

Even with the low turnout, Vinduska said those who did attend were supportive of the endeavor.

Music was provided by the Green Horns, bluegrass band. Marion Fire Department had two fire trucks in the park. Children were able to sit in the trucks and blow the sirens.

"The meal and auction were a success," reported Vinduska. "I can't thank those people enough who came out Saturday and supported this." She was especially appreciative of Margo Yates, Marion Chamber of Commerce director, Marion Kiwanis Club for the tent, and Marion city crews.

"The city had the park all spruced up," Vinduska commented.

Vinduska also was appreciative to the Marion and Marion County businesses and residents for their support.

"There was a lot of participation from local and area businesses," Vinduska said. Vinduska also thanked the Marion County businesses who participated in the poker run.

Other communities that contributed were Kansas City, Salina, Council Grove, Emporia, and El Dorado.

"We made about the same amount of money this year with the bad weather as we made last year with the good weather," Vinduska said.

About $5,600 was raised from the barbecue, poker run, raffle, and auction.

KVC provides foster care services in Marion County. Funds will be used for non-budgeted expenses.

"We're looking forward to coming back to Marion next year," concluded Vinduska.
