Officer kills dog
After responding to a report of a dog at large at 228 South Roosevelt Monday afternoon, Marion police lieutenant Dean Keyes shot and killed a dog that charged him.
Keyes said that two dogs were involved in the attack at the house, but only one of them was in view when he first arrived at the house.
"One of the dogs was on the porch, where it was supposed to be," Keyes said. "It charged at me from the porch and another one came out from the storm door of the house. They both decided that they would have a piece of me."
Keyes eluded the dogs' first advance, but the dog that came from within the house continued to give chase.
"He came out at me again and I had no choice but to use my firearm," Keyes said.
The officer said he used almost a whole can of OC spray, or pepper spray to try and fend away the dogs before he discharged his weapon.
According to Keyes, the dogs he encountered at the house have been a source of concern for police departments in both Marion and in Hillsboro.
"This was my first encounter with them, and I intended for it to be our last," Keyes said. "One of the pit bulls chased a Hillsboro officer once and they've been a concern here in Marion, too."
