Old Glory desecrated
This past weekend has been a mixed bag for Marion. The town received regional TV publicity Friday for being patriotic, with Kitty Collett and other children doing a great job as spokesmen. Collett told the story of flying Old Glory and displaying yellow ribbons to support American troops.
Also, however, the town received a big blight the same night when some unpatriotic person ripped two of the American flags from poles along Main Street.
Marionites who want the flags to fly are reminded that the project costs money. Marion Chamber of Commerce member Greg Carlson is in charge of putting up and taking down the flags, which are legally lighted at night.
However, the flags are becoming tattered and worn. They were flown for weeks following the 9-11 tragedy. The wind and weather, as well as vandals, have taken their toll.
Replacements are necessary. Those who would like to contribute to the project should send a check to the Marion Chamber of Commerce office. Heavy duty all-weather flags cost about $50 each. Some poles also need to be replaced.
