Olympic torch to pass through county
The 2002 Olympic flame will pass through Marion County early Friday.
A brightly-colored rail car specially designed to transport the flame will leave Topeka at 3:55 a.m. It is scheduled to arrive in Wichita 6:55 a.m. The route will take it through Marion County, say officials with Union Pacific Railroad, probably between 5 and 6 a.m.
In Wichita, the flame will be carried along an eight-mile route throughout downtown. The train will stop on tracks at 701 East Douglas Avenue.
Thirty-eight runners will carry the flame on a winding route through Wichita. All torches used by the 11,500 torchbearers in the United States are made by the Coleman Company, Wichita.
The flame will arrive in Salt Lake City, Utah, Feb. 8 for opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics.
