I want to recommend a book. It is reporter Peter Jennings. It is a wonderful story of his life. It is a collection of the thoughts of those who knew him or worked with him and quite a few quotations from his reports. He was a Canadian who became an American citizen. It tells about his life and his parents. His family required good manners in their home, so maybe his mannerisms and good performances came from that. Young people, take note. Of course he was charming and handsome. That helped.
He reported on every world event in the last 20 years. You can trace world history by his reports. He did research and traveled all over the world, sometimes in very dangerous places. He was a very truthful and responsible person. His reports (some of them) covered AIDS in South Africa, Vietnam, the Olympics in 1968, the loss of the Challenger, Iraq, the terrible tragedy of 9/11.
Remember the exciting night when the new century came in? He took us around the clock when the time changed in each country. At least I stayed with him all the way. Thrilled! That must have taken a great deal of time and work.
At last I have seen the new school auditorium. What a beautiful building! Marion should be very proud of it. I attended the forum for state representatives. My grandson, Roger Hannaford III is a candidate. I was very proud of his performance. We need young people to take part in our government.
How else can our country grow and improve? I remember I thought civics was very dull in school. We need to make the procedure come alive. I know some schools have mock elections. That should help.
