Otto Truog

The Rev. Otto N. Truog, 86, died May 26, 2002, at his residence in Newton.

Born Jan. 13, 1918, at Swanville, Minn., he was the son of the late August and Ella (Dettler) Truog.

He was married to Alvina Asmus on June 11, 1944, at Long Island, Minn.

He formerly was pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, Lincolnville.

Memberships included Zion Lutheran Church, Newton and Newton Lion's Club.

In 1937 he graduated from St. Olaf's College, Northfield, Minn., and in 1944 from Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, Mo.

He was ordained in the Missouri Synod, Lutheran Church.

He was an active pastor 47 years, serving congregations in North Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas.

He also served in the Army National Guard from 1954 to 1964 attaining the rank of captain in the Chaplain's Corps.

In addition, he had taught high school in Minnesota and North Dakota. He also did special work as a youth camp director and with the developmentally disabled.

From his early youth, he was noted for his strong singing voice.

He enjoyed working in his yard and playing cards.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Long Prairie, Minn., with burial in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Alvina, of the home at Newton; sons, David of Big Rapids, Mich., Stephen of Appleton, Wis., and Brian of Yorkville, Ill.; daughters, Gloria Marohl of Edmonds, Wash., Jean Hausmann of Tulsa, Okla., and Brenda Meyers of Appleton, Wis.; sister, Melaine Spandi of Long Prairie, Minn.; and 13 grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with Missouri Synod Missions of the Lutheran Church.
