Parked vehicles damaged in Sunday evening rampage

Marion Police Department was kept busy Sunday evening responding to reports of vandalism to vehicles.

Fourteen vehicles were damaged by assailants breaking windows in the vehicles. Casey's General Store also reported damage to outdoor lights.

"It appears that a BB or pellet gun was used in all of the cases," said Marion Community Policing Officer Phillip Hartsfield. "All of the vehicles were parked on the streets."

The vandalism occurred throughout the city between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m.

"This is considered felony criminal damage to property," said Hartsfield. Damages amounting to $500 or more are considered to be a felony.

Early estimates range from $300 for one window to more than $1,000 in damage to some vehicles that sustained three or more broken windows.

"We believe the suspects were in a vehicle," added Hartsfield. "We are following leads and reviewing video tape."

Hartsfield is in charge of the investigation and asks the public for assistance.

"If anyone has information about people or vehicles at 10 p.m. Sunday evening, please call me," said Hartsfield. Even if it seems insignificant, the information could be of value.

Anyone who was the victim of vandalism is encouraged to contact Hartsfield at the Marion Police Department at 382-2651.

Hartsfield said Sergeant Jeff Soyez of the Marion County Sheriff's office is assisting with the investigation.
