Peabody meet a success for MHS runners
Sports reporter
The girls' and boys' Marion High School cross country teams ran about as evenly as possible Thursday at Peabody, with both teams posting 84 points and third-place finishes.
Camille Christensen, Amanda Richmond, and Jaclyn DeForest earned medals for the girls' team, while Ryan Jones and Louis Holt did the same for the boys' squad.
Sophomore Ryan Jones was the team's overall leader with a second-place finish in the 3.1-mile run. His time was 18 minutes, 40 seconds.
Louis Holt wasn't far behind with a fifth-place time of 18:57.
"It was a great race to watch," head coach Bethany Carlson said. "Ryan and Louis each have their different race strategies, and it's neat to see how the race plays out over 3.1 miles."
Carlson said her boys' team is improving every week.
"As a varsity team we have several newcomers that are still learning how to run a 3.1-mile race, so I look for our team to continue getting stronger," she said.
After not running last week to let some leg soreness heal, Christensen led the girls' team with a 2.4-mile time of 17:31. She finished 10th.
Richmond was just three seconds behind and finished 12th.
The final girls' medal was earned by DeForest who was 20th with a time of 18:01.
Carlson was pleased with the third-place finish, especially considering the two teams that finished ahead of MHS.
Bennington is ranked second in the state at the 2A level, and Remington is second in 3A.
"We had a great day," Carlson said.
The coach also was pleased with the way DeForest and Brooke Johnson (18:03, 22nd) "stepped up this week and competed hard."
Overall the two teams had 15 total runners on varsity and junior varsity who set personal records.
