Peggy Hett

Peggy Jean (McCarty) Hett was born Aug. 29, 1930, at Marion, the daughter of Gene and Vera (Keazer) McCarty.

She had two brothers, Larry and Don McCarty and two sisters, Dorothy Stubby and Patsy Adams, who is deceased.

She graduated from Marion High School in 1948.

On Nov. 21, 1948, Peggy married Jerry Hett. They lived in Wichita for three years before homesickness brought them back to Marion to be close to family. They were members of Marion Christian Church where she was involved with children's programs, taught Sunday school, was part of the Christian Women's Fellowship, and volunteered in other areas. Later she was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Jerry and Peggy had six children — five boys (Gene, Bob, Gary, Jerry Ray, and David) and one girl (Lori). They had 12 grandchildren.

Peggy enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, and picnicking. She always said that summer was not complete without picnics and homemade ice cream.

Her children remember that Peggy had a knack of always having enough food prepared for whoever happened to show up for supper. There seemed to always be an extra person around the table but she would never fret or refuse one of the friends that the children happened to bring home that night.

She was at Bethesda Home in Goessel for seven months. She died at the age of 71 on Aug. 2, 2002, at Newton Medical Center.

A memorial fund has been set up for the Marion Library in the children's section.

The funeral service for Peggy was held Aug. 7, 2002 at Emmanuel Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Sherfy officiating.

Vocalist for the service was Earnest Alexander and organist was Anita Hancock. Serving as casket bearers were Don Jones, Duane Jones, Jack Brunzell, and Dick Pracht. Honorary bearers were grandsons, Jared Hett, Jordan Hett, Ian Hett, Elliot Hett, Jason Hett, Adam Heerey, Ethan Hett, Isaac Hett, and Eli Hett.

Peggy is survived by five sons; Bob of Wichita, Gene, Gary, Jerry, and David, all of Marion; a daughter Lori Heerey of Marion; two brothers Don McCarty of Marion and Larry McCarty of Maple Lake, Minn.; a sister, Dorothy Stubby of Newton; and 12 grandchildren.
