Performers earn honors from music association

High school and middle school vocalists and instrumentalists from south central Kansas recently competed for district honors.

The South Central Kansas Music Educators Association honored six Marion High School vocalists and eight Marion Middle School vocalists. They also honored four MHS instrumentalists and four MMS instrumentalists.

For instrumentalists, the students auditioned before a panel of four judges. The students performed prepared material and performed by sight reading.

Between 500 and 600 instrumentalists auditioned for the district band and orchestra. The south central district encompasses schools between Salina and the Oklahoma border and from Kingman to Centre High School.

Mike Connell is the instrumental teacher at the middle school and high school.

For vocalists, the students followed the same criteria as for the instrumentalists except the vocalists only performed prepared material.

Between 600 and 700 vocalists auditioned for the district choir.

Kevin Moler is the vocal music teacher for the middle school and high school.
