Personnel decisions made by Centre board

In addition to budget issues, personnel actions occupied members at the June 9 meeting of Centre USD #397 Board of Education.
The resignation of first year teacher Ryan Isbell was accepted He taught 7-12 biology/life science and was assistant track coach Superintendent Demitry Evancho said science and math teachers are hard to find. He has conducted one interview. The board advised him to offer a contract.
The board also accepted the resignations of Jerry and Rowena Plett as part-time custodians. They have worked in that capacity since March 1994.
The board spent 40 minutes in executive session with Superintendent Evancho to discuss matters related to non-elected personnel.
After another 10-minute executive session with Evancho and Falen, the board approved employment of the following classified personnel for the 2003-2004 school year:
— Office staff — Peggy Falen, board clerk; Dawn Luna, CHS secretary; Francie Mueller, secretary to superintendent/treasurer; Debi Sweet, QPA secretary.
— Aides — Gail Burns, CES lunchroom; Janet Rindt, CHS library; Sheri Stahlecker, CES computer/classroom/library; Rose Ybarra, K-4 teachers' aide.
— Custodial staff — Lawrence Rindt, CES; Ron Mille, CHS head custodian; Martin Combs, CHS; Mark Pagenkopf, asbestos, water, and wastewater management.
— Food service staff — Mary Ann Mille, CES head cook; Da'Linda Salada, CES assistant cook; Inge Nordstrom, CHS head cook; Delores Svoboda, CHS assistant cook.
— Transportation — Director, Roy Houdyshell, and drivers Warren Barton, Elaine Mueller, Donna Southers, Gary Steiner, Kenny Steiner, and Rose Zinn.
The board then voted to employ Larry Cameron as a regular route bus driver. He was a substitute driver for the district during the past year.
Rachael Naerebout was employed as a van driver for a special education route beginning in July. She will serve on a probationary basis until she successfully competes training as a fully-certified school bus driver.
Others approved to receive CDL training include Martin Combs, custodian; Gaea Wimmer, teacher; and Kacey Jarvis, patron. They may drive in the absence of regular drivers and/or on activity trips.
Appointments included Clark Davis as representative to Marion County Special Education Cooperative; Evancho as freedom of information officer; and Falen as custodian of records.
SKESC membership
The board authorized continued membership with the Southeast Kansas Education Service Center (SKESC) at Greenbush at a cost of $6,249.25, but not until after some discussion and several other actions were proposed.
SKESC provides services related to school improvement, staff development, environmental compliance, transportation (including drug and alcohol testing of drivers), administration forums for superintendents, principals, and counselors; regional crisis intervention; and healthy living curriculum.
A motion made by John Garrard and seconded by Clark Davis to eliminate the last two areas of service was defeated by a vote of 2-4. A motion to include the two areas was approved 4-2.
The board also approved a basic accident benefit plan and extended catastrophic coverage for all students for a total premium of $4,835.95.
Reports
Superintendent Evancho said the high school roof project is on schedule and is projected to be completed by the first week in July.
He also reported the sewer project in Lost Springs and hookup at the elementary school is complete.
The music room at CES will be relocated to the second floor immediately above the lunchroom, as decided by faculty and affected personnel.
According to a report by Principal Neal Weltha, Laura Klenda planned to attend the June 10-15 national FFA leadership conference in Washington, D.C. Andrea Carlson will attend the national FBLA conference June 24-27 in Texas.
Jennifer Kassebaum reported the governor has appointed a task force to address state budget issues. She said the task force will have the governor's ear and a tax increase could be the result.
