Pet of the Week: Kids love Seacats' cat

When parents bring children into Brad and Anita Seacat's True Value Hardware Store on U.S.-56, the first thing the kids look for is their cat.

Brad said the nameless animal is very tolerant, letting kids carry him around and always willing to be held.

The feline has been at the store for about five months.

One day, while James Schlehuber was there, he and Brad saw a mouse run along the floor.

"We could probably use a cat," Brad remarked. They had been using poison to control the pests.

Schlehuber left and shortly returned with a half-grown kitten.

"The cat hid behind a wall for two days," Brad said, "but now he's always around and loves attention."

The cat's favorite resting place is on a coat Brad placed under the check-out counter. Brad said the feline tended to lie on customers' coats when they laid them on the counter, so he decided he'd better provide one of his own.

The feline lives at the store day and night.

"The best thing is that we don't have mice anymore," Brad said. "He's the best mouse-prevention we've got."

He said he found out that lots of hardware stores have cats for the same reason.

The Seacats may want to have a cat-naming contest so the poor creature does not have to remain nameless. What's a pet without a name!
