Pet of the week: Puppy finds home at pharmacy
In what might be construed as an attempt to keep up with other Marion businesses that have pets, Debbie Buchholz of Marion Pharmacy decided to buy a new pup a few weeks ago.
Maxie, short for Maxine, is a Pekinese female that was 13 weeks old Sunday.
Actually, according to Debbie, she was looking for another dog because the Golden Retriever she had been caring for died recently.
Debbie purchased the fuzzy ball of fur at a pet store in McPherson.
"I wanted a small dog," she said, "and my daughter Lisa talked me into it. She helped me pick her out."
The pug-nosed pet doesn't stay at the store all the time. Debbie takes her to the store and takes her home with her when she leaves.
She keeps Maxie on a leash at the store, where she spends most of her time in the back room. Occasionally, Debbie takes her to the front of the store to greet customers. They take delight in the little pup and can't resist the urge to pat her on the head and feel her soft hairy coat.
"She might get in people's way or get stepped on if I let her run," Debbie said.
"She's quite the guard dog," employee Gayle Thomas added. "She likes to sniff at people's ankles."
Debbie said son Joey, a senior at MHS, loves the little pup. The couple's oldest son, Chad, likes her, too, but he prefers hunting dogs.
It's certain that little Maxie will never experience a lack of love and attention as long as she is in the Buchholz family's care.
