Pet of the week: Tabby finds home at computer store

Walk into Great Plains Computers and Networking, 324 E. Main, and you're sure to be greeted by K.C. the cat. She is very friendly and loves attention.

Lloyd and Robin Davies said the tabby showed up at their house one day about two years ago and hung around for a week. Their daughter, Samantha, enjoyed carrying her around. The cat appeared clean and well fed.

One cold, sleety evening, the Davies found the cat on their front porch. They put her in the garage, then took her to the store the next day.

They put an ad in the paper and contacted veterinarian Jessica Laurin, but nobody claimed her. They decided to keep her and named her K.C., after Kansas City, their former address.

K.C. has a distinguishing orange spot between her ears. The Davies said a cat with similar coloring and a similar spot hangs around the Ampride Store. They think the two could have come from the same litter.

Robin said K.C. gets lonely during the weekend but doesn't show any interest in going outside.

One time, they brought another cat to the store to be a companion to K.C. However, the feline refused to accept the new cat, and the Davies finally took it home.

Customers sometimes come into the store just to play with K.C. She jumps up on the counter to greet people.

"Most people don't mind," Robin said. A former employee despised the cat, she said, but K.C. had an annoying attraction for her.

The cat likes to sit in the big plate glass windows at the front of the store and watch birds flying and walking around on the sidewalk.

Robin said K.C. sleeps wherever she pleases, sometimes in a large planter in the window, sometimes in office chairs.

"She is 'in your face' all the time," Robin said. "It's hard to get work done, but it's kind of nice having something around to break the monotony."
