Burdette "Bud" Peterson received special recognition May 2 at the Centre High School athletic banquet.
He has retired from coaching football after 25 years.
Guest speaker, Jayson Hanschu, a 1984 CHS graduate, spoke of Peterson as "a coach that teaches."
"You remember how he made you feel," he said.
Stan Wiles also was recognized because he worked side-by-side with Peterson for 25 years. Wiles coaches junior high boys and also is an assistant high school football coach.
A video was shown depicting all the football teams Peterson coached beginning in 1981.
He received numerous tributes. Deb Wiles presented her view of Peterson "from the press box," where she video-taped games at least 22 years.
One tribute was from Peterson's daughter, Lisa Beye, an instructor at Centre. She spoke on behalf of his family.
Hanschu read tributes contributed by former players, and Gail and Marissa Makovec shared sentiments from their son, Simon, who played for Peterson and now is a soldier serving in Iraq.
Senior players Dustin Burnett, Tad Remy, and Bryant Gutsch also praised Peterson as their mentor.
At the end of the presentation, the entire football team came forward, surrounded the coach, and gave a cheer.
Peterson and Wiles were presented with autographed footballs.
Athlete awards
