Pharmacists honor former resident
Brad Tice, son of Martin and Margaret Tice of Marion, received the Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award recently at the Iowa Pharmacy Association annual meeting.
Tice is director of the Drake University/Albertsons-Osco Drug Community Care Laboratory and assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Drake University, Des Moines.
He assists in the development of innovative pharmacy programs and services. He helped establish pharmaceutical care clerkship sites with 12 stores in the Des Moines area and 270 in the Chicago area.
Tice has been active in local, state, and national pharmacy and helped develop a program at Drake entitled "Shaping Your Pharmacy Future." It assists community pharmacy owners in developing business and leadership strategies for their practices and introduces students to community pharmacy ownership and management.
The Distinguished Young Pharmacist is a national award, started in 1987 to recognize one pharmacist in each state for involvement and dedication to pharmacy. The Iowa Pharmacy Association has more than 900 members.
Tice also has developed a new software package to assist pharmacy students in tracking how medications are helping patients over time. For example, if students see that a patient's cholesterol remains high despite medication, they would recommend the dosage be increased.
The information, recorded using hand-held computers, enables professors to better analyze how students are doing. It also could be used by registered pharmacists.
In the May 20 issue of "Drug Topics" magazine, Tice and his partner have sought a patent and want to develop the program further. Tice said they plan to sell the software package at a low price so it would be easily accessible to pharmacy schools and pharmacists.
