Pilsen: Family, friends join Nowaks to celebrate anniverary

Joe and JoAnn Nowak enjoyed a busy weekend full of family and friends as they celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.
Guests included Joe's siblings — Bernadette Cummings, Castle Rock, Wis.; Alberta Sullivan, Madison, Wis.; Rita and Ike Edge, Montfort, Wis.; and Jim Nowak, Milwaukee, Wis.
Also in attendance at their parents' anniversary were Joe and Yo Nowak, Jack, Jim, and Joanna, Goddard; John and Judy Nowak, Joannie, Janie, Josie, Jonah, Jessie, Jenna, and John Jr., Inman; Jill and Jeremy Wills, Wichita; Jerry Nowak, Jordan, J.P., and Jerryn, Potwin; Jade and Amya Nowak, Lost Springs; Judy and Kevin Steinborn, Natasha, Sonja, and Kristen, Josh Montgomery, Marion; Jackie and Paul Gengler, Arielle, Neill, and Averi, Salina; Jan and Jayson Hanschu, Jakob and Jorge, Hillsboro; and Jennifer and Tim Frasher, Eli, Allie, and Luke, Wichita.
Festivities included a small dinner for family and close friends, Mass, and a reception and dance.
The Gail Makovec family attended the Burdick Labor Day celebration. Shaina helped in the FFA booth where dinner was served. The family attended the play "Murder by Chocolate" Monday night. Shaina Makovec attended the Holy Family CYO meeting Wednesday evening at the Marion activity center. The Makovec family attended the junior high football game at Centre Thursday evening. Again Shaina helped with the concession stand since the sophomore class is in charge this year. Shaina went with the Centre band Saturday to Band Day at the Kansas State Fair, Hutchinson. The Makovec family attended the 60th wedding anniversary reception and open house in Ramona Sunday honoring Alfred and Darlene Sondergard.
Labor Day evening dinner guests of Edmund Steiner included Mr. and Mrs. Jim Gutsch of Las Vegas, Nev., who spent the weekend with Edmund, David, Tresa, Steve, and Amber Gutsch of Ozawkie, Terry and Deanna Steiner, Terry Alan, Christina, and Miranda Steiner, Dennis and Mary Steiner, and Vickie Smolik.
Dennis and Mary Steiner drove to Newton Friday evening to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ehlers and their houseguests, Beverly Gonzales of Warrenton, Va., and Linda Ehlers of Denver, Colo. Beverly and Linda are Mary's cousins.
Mr. and Mrs. George Steiner of Wichita and Ron and Barbara Myers of Eureka were Sunday afternoon visitors of John Spachek.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Silhan attended both the Florence and Burdick Labor Day parades.
Amelia Vinduska accompanied Margaret Jirak to Marion Monday to attend Mass. Margie Stroda took her mother to Lincolnville Friday for a doctor's appointment. In the early afternoon, Amelia and Vernie Konecny visited with Margaret Jirak. Ken Vinduska visited his mother on Thursday. Margie and Arthur Stroda, Emily Staatz, and John Spachek visited her on Sunday.
Magdalen Dvorak and Amelia Vinduska played Bingo with the residents at St. Luke Living Center Friday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Meysing attended the birthday party Sunday afternoon honoring Mary Stika on her 88th birthday at the Marion City Building. Pauline and Bernard visited Paul and Alice Sunday evening.
Bob and Margaret Grochowsky of Topeka and Dora Holub of Marion visited with Ruby Holub Sunday afternoon.
LaVada Holub visited with the McGlachlin family in Newton Sunday afternoon.
Karen, Don, and Kara Druse treated Magdalen Dvorak to a birthday dinner Sunday at Perkins Restaurant in McPherson. Magdalen said she had a call from Roger Dvorak of Killeen, Texas, and Nancy Harrison also of Killeen, today, Monday, wishing her a happy birthday.
Evelyn Grogan of Winfield came Friday to spend some time as a houseguest of Emma Klenda.
Pat and Dean Bina enjoyed the German buffet Friday evening at the Durham Café. Pat said the buffet was excellent. The Binas visited with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Nelson in Marion Sunday evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Konecny and Adam and Brandon Temel drove to Salina Sunday afternoon to visit Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Leckliter and family.
Edmund and Mary Lou Kroupa visited Irene Novak at the Hillsboro Community Medical Center. They also visited with Theo Kroupa at Marion Manor.
Emma and Dale Davidson and sons took Irene Tajchman to Sunday dinner at the Pizza Hut in Marion, honoring her on Grandparents' Day.
Terry and Cindy Vinduska spent the weekend in Manhattan with their daughter, Jill. They attended the K-State vs. Louisiana-Monroe game on Saturday.
John and Daniel Goentzel spent the weekend at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson. Daniel's food entry received a purple.
Mr. and Mrs. David Oborny and family and Mr. and Mrs. Val Klenda and family treated Mr. and Mrs. George Oborny at Gambino's honoring them on Grandparents' Day.
The Kevin Hill family helped last Sunday evening with the Lincolnville Wide Awake 4-H float that was entered in the Burdick parade on Monday. Nellie marched with the Centre band and also rode on the float on Labor Day. Teresa and Nellie drove to Salina Tuesday where Nellie had an appointment. Nellie played in a volleyball game in Marion Thursday evening. On Saturday, she marched with the Centre band at Band Day at the state fair. Cassidy Hill had soccer practice Friday after school. Heath had soccer practice Saturday. Both Heath and Cassidy had soccer practice tonight, Monday. Teresa said that a representative from a music company was in Centre Thursday evening and Heath has chosen to play the bells. Teresa and Nellie drove to Hutchinson Sunday morning to attend the state fair. Nellie gave a demonstrative talk entitled "How to Make a Camping Lantern." She received a blue ribbon.
The big event of the week was the 45th wedding anniversary celebration honoring Joe and JoAnn Nowak. Mass was offered at 7 p.m. by Father John Jirak. A family dinner was held afterward in the Pilsen church dining room. A reception and dance followed in the Pilsen Community Center.
I had a splendid weekend — Dr. Linda Loney of Boston, Mass., came Thursday and stayed with me until Sunday morning. Dr. John Loney of Sunrise Beach, Mo., arrived Friday and also stayed until Sunday morning. It was great having both of them home.

Terry and Kathy Silhan met Richard and Mary Stika of Lakewood, Colo., Wayne and Cindy Spachek and grandson, Ben of Wichita, Mike Spachek of Andover, and Monty and Sarah Stuchlik in Newton Friday evening for dinner at Applebee's.
George and Charlene Svitak visited on Sunday with Maxine Svitak who is a patient at St. Luke Hospital. They also attended the 88th birthday celebration honoring Mary Stika at the Marion City Building. Sylvia Bezdek called on George and Charlene Sunday evening. Charlene drove to El Dorado on business today, Monday. George visited their son, Doug, on Friday
George and Patsy Waner visited with Steve, Ann, and Claire Buckendahl in Benton Sunday afternoon.
Darla Kasper and Kevin Searl of Newton and Lee Richmond of Marion were Friday evening supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Sklenar. The Sklenars visited with Russell and Yvonne Schroeder and family on Sunday. The group was celebrating Russell's birthday.
Patsy Waner was among the St. Mark's quilters who helped serve the luncheon for family and friends of Maudie Vinduska Tuesday morning after the funeral.
Sylvia Bezdek attended the Merle Albright funeral services in Lincolnville Tuesday afternoon. She attended the 88th birthday celebration honoring Mary Stika at the Marion City Building Sunday afternoon and also called on Mildred Bezdek Lucas. Sylvia visited Irma Reznicek today, Monday.
I just turned on TV and see Monday Night Football. Which means, with the football season in full swing, there will be a lot of football widows. At my house it's a widow watching football!
