Principal takes time to converse with students

Time. An investment Marion High School principal Ken Arnhold makes each month with his students. One way Arnhold achieves his goals for communicating with students is through a program he calls, "The Principal's Round Table."
Two students from each class, freshmen through seniors, are randomly chosen to participate in these discussion groups.
Typically the group meets during lunch at Pizza Hut. Many school-related subjects are discussed, and students are encouraged to give their views on various topics. Participants sometimes are given topic suggestions from fellow classmates.
"We sometimes talk up to two hours about ways to improve the school, things we can change and things we can't change, and how to live with them," Arnhold said.
Many issues are brought to the table including parking concerns, ways to improve the school, possible class subjects, school spirit, campus beautification, and clarification of school policies.
In fact, Arnhold credits the round table with coming up with the idea of two ITV classes currently being offered at MHS. Arnhold appreciates the opportunity to talk to all students, saying "It's those students that aren't in trouble and aren't in the limelight. The students in the middle. It gives me an opportunity to get their feedback.
"I think we've seen some increase in student involvement," Arnhold said. He plans to continue meeting with students on a monthly basis, noting the recent success of the program.
"A student's opinion is valuable," Arnhold concluded.
