Program announced for CCC statue dedication

The Kansas CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) worker statue will be unveiled at 2 p.m. Saturday at Marion County Lake near the intersection of Upland Road and Lakeshore Drive.

The six-foot bronze statue is the 28th to be erected in the United States and is a memorial to the 38,136 Kansans who served in the CCC throughout the country from 1933-1942.

The ceremony will include participants from across the state and a CCC alumni association representative from South Carolina. Everyone is invited to attend. Bring lawn chairs.

Don Jolley will be master of ceremonies. He is a resident of Marion County Lake and past president of the National Recreation and Park Association.

The program will include:

"America the Beautiful" - bagpiper Lonny Liljegren

Flat salute - led by Bill Holdeman, CCC alumnus

Invocation - Rev. Robert Priest

Welcome - Dale Snelling, superintendent of Marion County Park and Lake

Remarks - Don Jolley

Address - "History of the CCC and Present Day Activities," Walter Atwood, president of the National Association of Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni

Introduction of CCC alumni

"Scotland the Brave" - Lonny Liljegren

Remarks - Keth Sexson, assistant secretary for operations, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (representing secretary Mike Hayden)

Remarks - Judge William Randolph Carpenter, Topeka

"Taps" - Dwight Beckham Sr., Marion County Lake resident

Refreshments will be served at Kingfisher's Inn immediately after the program until 4 p.m.
