Property tax rebate program is a success

Staff reporter

Marion County's Neighborhood Revitalization Program is going full speed ahead.

To date, there are more than 100 properties on the list for rebates.

Property owners can apply for a rebate of property taxes when a new structure is built or significant remodeling occurs.

A breakdown of those properties were presented Monday to Marion County Commission by county appraiser Cindy Magill and county treasurer Jeannine Bateman.

Residents of the county or any city within the county can participate.

Magill said there were seven applications that were inactive because the property owners were delinquent in paying their property taxes.

The commission asked the officials to present a status report every six months.

The countywide program was implemented by the commission in July 2005.

In other business:

— County director of planning, zoning, and environmental health Bobbi Strait reported a salvage operation that was located on a county road and right-of-way has met compliance issues.

— The commission approved the low bid of $269 for four tires that includes a $100 buy back of the used tires from Mike's Service Center of Marion for the county vehicle Strait uses. Rod's Tires of Hillsboro also presented a bid of $363 with no buy-back option.

— Strait also reported she will provide inspections of new homes that will be built in a subdivision in Goessel. The homes will be USDA-compliant homes.

— Interim transfer station director Rollin Schmidt reported there were 508 tons collected in December for a total of 7,389 tons for the year.

— The commission approved a resolution for cost sharing of chemicals required for noxious weeds. The cost share applies only to landowners and farmers, not dealers.

— Schmidt requested and received a five-minute executive session to discuss personnel. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.

— National Sign Company of Ottawa had the low bid of $2,969 for 250 steel posts. Hall Signs of Blooming, Ind., had the low bid of $3,867 for 536 metal signs.

— Road and bridge superintendent Jim Herzet requested and received a 10-minute executive session to discuss personnel. Steve Hudson, road supervisor, also was in attendance. The meeting reconvened with no decisions.

— Jesse Hamm was hired as an equipment operator I in the road and bridge department.

— Herzet will be obtaining bids for overhead doors at the south and main shops.

— Two new pickup trucks are included in the five-year plan for the road and bridge department to be purchased this year.

The commission wanted Herzet to wait until a decision could be made about repairs/replacement of Sunflower Road.
