Protect us from ourselves
The legislature is in session. It's open season on taxpayers. Folks who otherwise are nice people then are elected to political office often become dangerous.
Instead of keeping control on government growth they try to expand. Government is not a business, a bigger budget is not a sign of success, it's proof of failure.
That's true on all levels from city, school, county, and state, to national.
Bush will be re-elected, we hope, but is making some big mistakes. He has expanded government, added new departments, and now proposes spending billions of bucks on going to Mars.
Sebelius was our choice for governor, but is dead wrong on her school finance formula. If schools deserve more money based on the fact that education is important, the answer is not increased taxes. There is so much waste in government, including schools, that could be used to a better advantage. Just look around.
One of the biggest "damn fool" issues coming up before our Kansas Legislature this year is the "right to bear" law which would allow folks to carry concealed firearms.
Rip Snorter has spent considerable time carrying weapons and shudders at the thought of some folks carrying a concealed firearm. If they want to carry a gun, they should have it in plain sight.
Rip has a couple of .45 cal. Colt pistols and a .30 cal. rifle from World War II and is thinking of carrying them (fully exposed) if other folks are allowed to carry concealed guns.
As Pogo said, "We have met the enemy and he is us." Sometimes we need to protect ourselves from ourselves.
