Proud farmers must be independent

Is there pride in taking subsidies? Is there pride in being dependent? Is that the principle this nation was founded upon? Is not a man's wealth his independence in running his own business, earning his way?

Elimination of ag subsidies would create an adjustment all along the production chain and in ag-related industries. There would be some fallout.

Lack of subsidies would probably eliminate some farmers who could not figure out a way to survive. How is that any different from what happens every day to people who own a small business and are forced to quit because they can't make it? Nobody subsidizes them to insure they stay in business.

What would be the price of fertilizer or herbicides if farmers didn't receive subsidies? Chemical companies would be forced to bring the price in line with what farmers could pay.

Without subsidies, grain production would fall more in line with demand and land prices would be reasonable. Machinery would have to be built practical so that farmers could afford to buy it.

A study of past price trends reveals that income levels tend to remain stable or increase on non-subsidized livestock, fruits, and vegetables, while income from grain production continues to drop.

With the federal government once again in red ink, farmers can help themselves and their tax-paying neighbors by refusing subsidies and insisting on making it on their own. In the end, they'll stand taller and feel better about themselves.
