Rain doesn't halt fireworks show
Rain storms did not deter local residents and Marion County Lake visitors from supporting Marion County fire departments.
Food and fireworks were offered to residents and visitors Sunday evening at the county lake.
Jim Cloutier of Shawmar Oil Company provided funds for the event. Proceeds from donations at the events will provide funds for equipment and training for 10 county fire departments.
Mike Regnier, deputy fire chief of the Marion fire department, said $3,300 was raised Sunday from donations.
More than 1,500 hot dogs and bratwursts were served.
Gerry Kline of Marion provided hay wagon rides.
A pumper truck from Peabody fire department demonstrated its ability to provide a powerful stream.
The truck was parked on the boat ramp near the swimming area at the lake and sprayed water across the lake several hundred feet away.
Firefighters from Marion and Hillsboro worked side-by-side at the grill, cooking meat while other firefighters from various departments collected donations, served the food and drinks, and visited with the supporters.
Centre Girl Scout Cadets and Senior Troop cleared off tables and assisted with cleanup.
Although a little disappointed with the turnout for the dinner, the volunteers considered it a success.
Following the meal, fireworks were displayed.
Dale Snelling, lake superintendent, reported an increase in the number of campers and revenue.
"Last year we had 29 campers around the lake, this year there were 64," Snelling said.
Snelling said it appeared the weather didn't deter many from attending the fireworks show.
"Judging from the traffic, I'd say it was the same amount of cars as last year," said Snelling.
