Raise the Roof dance to benefit Strong City landmark

"Raise the Roof" is the motto of the benefit dance to be held from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. Sept. 6 at Marble Hill School, also known as Ken's Place, near Strong City.

Tickets are on sale at several business places in Strong City and Cottonwood Falls.

Proceeds from the dance will benefit the fund to restore the historic landmark, Strong City Theatre or "Opera House."

The native limestone structure was established in 1901, with $6,000 raised for its construction.

For more than two decades it provided live entertainment and in 1925 the upstairs portion was remodeled into a movie theatre. The lower level remained a community theatre.

Though the building has deteriorated, many volunteers are cooperating to restore it. It is owned by the city, but individual gifts and grants will be needed to complete the project.
