Random Thoughts

Sometimes I get involved in the TV weather map. They show so many Kansas towns I never heard of. It makes me wonder about them and how they got their names. Some are very strange. Take Derby and Rose Hill. My uncle Sam and aunt Cora lived on a farm near those towns. My sister Faith and I would go there for a visit during our summer vacation. There were no girl cousins but four big boys, a little older than us. They loved to tease us. I guess that was the attraction.

Eventually Uncle Sam left the farm and moved to Wichita. He started a small family grocery store. It was there he won a Heinz award for selling their products. His prize was a box containing 57 varieties.

I remember their home was stacked with Life magazines since it was first published. The same thing happened with my husband's uncle, Ed Hannaford. He had a huge accumulation of National Geographic magazines since it was first published. It does seem a shame to discard such wonderful publications.

Sunday night I watched a program on TV that was interesting. The awarding of prizes to stage plays on Broadway in New York. Whoopie Goldberg was the master of ceremonies and did a really good job. They showed a skit from several plays. I felt like I was right on Broadway. I hoped they would show something from "South Pacific," which had been resurrected from the 1960s. They did! A man sang, "One Enchanted Evening."

Not long ago Shakespeare's "Hamlet" was shown on KPTS. So I thought I should watch it. In high school I portrayed Lady Macbeth and still remember a few lines. But I didn't watch it. Shakespeare is quoted all the time, so I guess I'm uneducated.
