Random Thoughts

A recent newspaper article about "Doc" Brinkley reminded me of the time he visited Marion. I think it was the time he ran for governor against Alf Landon and almost made it.

He was known for implanting goat glands in men to renew their masculinity. He performed thousands of operations and even had his own radio station. He prescribed medicine and provided it. Naturally he became very wealthy. The state finally realized what he was doing and canceled his so-called medical license as well as his radio license. Then he started a radio station in Mexico and still broadcast into the U.S.

It seems to me he once operated a large hospital in Eureka Springs, Ark. It was a large, beautiful building on the highest point there, that once was a girls' school. The last time I was there it was a fancy hotel. People will follow anyone who promises wonderful things.

Gracia Burnham, the Kansas missionary who was held prisoner in the Philippines for a year by rebels, returned there recently as a witness against those people. I imagine that was hard. It would bring back her suffering and the tragic death of her husband who was killed as they were being rescued.

Say, fellows, here is a new way to propose to your loved one. This guy took his girl fishing and gave her a pole to hold. He told her to pull out the line. There was supposed to be his grandmother's diamond ring on the hook. When she pulled it out the hook was empty and the ring was gone. Maybe some day a lucky fisherman may be dressing a fish he has caught and there in its innards will be a beautiful ring. Wouldn't it be nice if it should be an old, gray-haired fisherman, the original guy? Life is full of surprises!
