Random Thoughts

Labor Day has arrived. What happened to August? The town of Florence is to have a big parade and entertainment on that day. Then there will be fireworks at the county lake.

I have watched fireworks at Manhattan. Some of the spectators watched the show from their boats. That makes a pretty picture with the colored lights on the boats.

Why do we like to see the extravagant waste of money as the rockets shoot up into the air? The biggest rocket of all is when the astronauts take off into the "wild blue yonder!" That is pretty expensive and impressive.

School has started and that means football!

The other day we were talking about Notre Dame and Knute Rockne's plane crashing in the Flint Hills. There is an impressive stone memorial there — in the middle of nowhere.

That brought up a childhood memory of my son, Bud. I don't remember the event but he said when he was in junior high school, he and a bunch of boys formed a Notre Dame fan club. They met in our basement. He said they played the Notre Dame fight song and had an older boy as their leader. He was Bob Edmunds. I suppose their discussions were all on football — what else?

I wonder what other things will be remembered of childhood fun — parents are the last to know. I'm sure I have a few memories of things I used to do that I never told my parents. Nothing bad, I'm sure!
