Random Thoughts: Beauty contest reflections

Last week I promised I would tell you more about the book, "Nights in Rodanthe," by Nicholas Sparks. The author wrote "Message in a Bottle." We all have read that and seen the movie. This story takes place on the coast of North Carolina and is a romance. It is well written and pleasant reading.

A change of pace is a book "Thanks for the Memories, Mr. President" written by Helen Thomas, that tough reporter. It tells of her experiences questioning the last eight presidents. She gives Clinton about 40 pages and each of the others about seven or eight. Does that tell us something? Interesting.

I was given the book, "Katherine Graham's Washington." It is by Katherine Graham. She was the owner of The Washington Post. She started this before she died a couple of years ago from an accident while skating on an ice-covered lake in Utah. Others finished the book. It is a collection of articles by other prominent writers and comments by her. I have read her autobiography "Personal History." I liked it so much, I'm looking forward to reading the new one.

I see where Funny Cide, the horse who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, is now ready to take on the Belmont. If he wins, he will be a triple crown winner. When you read this, the race will be over. I hope he wins.

The other day I read an article on salt and its importance in our lives. Remember Lot's wife, who turned to salt, and we are told we "are the salt of the earth?" Some years ago I had surgery in a hospital in Wichita. When I wanted to check on my records, I was told they were in the salt mines in Hutchinson. I guess the humidity and temperature there is a good preservation. Do things there last forever?
