Random Thoughts: Handsome men and mountain climbing

I am so sad that we lost Peter Jennings. He was my favorite anchorman. I guess part of his charm was that he was very handsome, and you know women can't resist that.

My daughter Mary and her husband Bob took me to Wichita to help Ilene and Bob Reinke celebrate their 50th. It was a lovely party as their daughter Julie greeted us wearing her mother's beautiful wedding gown. They had many articles displayed pinpointing various times in their lives. One was Bob's military uniform. That brought back memories. I claim him as one of my own, as he grew up with my son Bud. I was his den mother when he was a Cub Scout and his Sunday school teacher then, too. The boys played football in my front yard, or built snow forts and fought many a snowball war. I'm just now getting some grass to grow there.

This time of the year reminds me of when I walked up Pikes Peak. It is the time of many stars and comets dashing across the sky. As we climbed the mountain the stars were so brilliant and close, I felt I could reach up and grab one.

The other day I got curious about mountains so I checked them in an atlas. Mount Everest is the tallest, 28,000 feet. Some others are close. Pikes Peak is 14,000 feet. I've been on Mount Ranier and Mount Hood and I saw Mount Fugi peaking through a cloud. I can see why people become obsessed with climbing them. Once was enough for me!
