Random Thoughts: Lessons last a lifetime
Do you ever wonder how many lies you have told in your lifetime? Not big ones, just little ones — like a friend has her hair styled and asks you how you like it. Although you don't think it improves her beauty, you say, "It's great."
On the morning shows on TV they often do makeovers on people. Usually they look better, but not always. I always wonder how they can take care of it at home.
One time I decided I needed a "new look," so I went to Wichita and had a famous "hair designer" do my hair. Sort of a Peter Pan look. When I got home I went to my barber and asked him if he would continue to keep my hair in the same style. He wouldn't even look at it. So much for hometown glamour!
One time Frances Hoch and I were in the same beauty parlor and sitting under twin dryers. Of course, we couldn't resist visiting a little. So we kept ducking out from the dryers as we chatted. All at once, the lady who owned the shop came over and snapped off the power. I can't remember if she ever turned the machine back on. I hope we got our hair dried. I'm sure we were very humble and quiet the rest of the time.
Back to telling lies — I was about two or three and somehow Mother's lovely lace dresser scarf got whacked by some scissors. She asked, "who did that?" and I quickly answered "Faith did it." Of course, she was about 18 months old and wouldn't know what to do with a pair of scissors. I guess my mother didn't believe me, because she went and got a bar of soap and some water and briskly washed out my mouth. You don't forget things like that.
