Random Thoughts: Memorial Day was glorious

I just finished the book, "Morning on Horseback." It's about Theodore Roosevelt by David McCullough. It is the story about his growing up years and as a young adult. What a wonderful man and what an interesting family. I just didn't want it to end.

Memorial Day was a wonderful day. My daughter, Mary and her husband Bob came from Salina and took me to the cemetery where we listened to the speaker, heard the trumpets play, and saw the military perform. All very impressive. Afterward, we joined the people there at the schoolhouse and ate donuts and drank coffee. My lifetime friend, Margaret Wolf and some of her family were there. In fact, I enjoyed visiting with a lot of visitors.

Afterward we went to the VFW for lunch. It was very nice. Some music was played of World War I. Bev Hoch, our opera gal, got up and sang some of them. What a nice day!

The VFW Auxiliary had set up a table with a red rose and a candle with an empty chair beside it. A touching reminder of those no longer with us.

It is good for us to stop and remember those who laid down their lives for the love of freedom. So even in this present day with the terrible fighting going on and our men and women doing the same thing. It is so hard to deal with people without war. What is wrong with us?
