Random Thoughts: She's proud of her architect grandson

I'm pretty proud of my grandson, David Exline, an architect from California. He designed a work of art for the Salina Smoky Hill River festival. His father Bob, brother Rob, and uncle Jerry Exline, all engineers, carried out the design and made it come to life. The Salina Journal had a good picture and a fine write-up about the project. It consists of many wheels of various sizes and they rotate at different speeds. It stands 25 feet high right beside a bridge you cross when you enter the park. They call it "The Reinventing of the Wheel." Spectacular!

Funny Cide, the race horse running at the Belmont track, lost. I think it was surely because of the muddy track. He was way ahead right at first, then two other contenders crept up on him and passed him just smooth as silk. I felt so sorry for the jockey's young son, who just cried his heart out. His mother tried to comfort him without any luck.

A friend and I took lunch and went out to Marion Reservoir the other noon. It was one of those gorgeous Kansas days — partly cloudy, soft breeze, and a mystic haze hovering over the water. There were a few Canada geese just strolling around and then going into water and taking off in a straight line — no riffling and no splashing — just silent and smooth.

Gov. Sebelius has declared the lake area a disaster area because of some algae taking over. My friend and I didn't see any of those mean little critters swimming around.
