Random Thoughts: Something to think about
In 1803, Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million. In 2005, it is estimated the great hurricanes Katrina and Rita will cost the government $500 billion to reconstruct the coastal areas of that piece of land. Makes one wonder doesn't it? Don't get me wrong — I love the South.
Another thought — Holland has been able to survive although most of it is below sea level. Maybe we should learn their secret. I remember boating on those canals feeling perfectly safe. What about the story of the little Dutch boy who held his thumb in the hole and saved his country from sinking beneath the sea? I just wanted to give you something to think about. You know, I like to stir things up.
What a wonderful day we had for the Old Settlers' gathering. It seemed like quite a few of the usual visitors were missing. Yet the people I did see meant a lot. Maybe it wasn't time for their class reunions.
I always think I should stand up and represent my class of 1922. Bill Moneypenny was principal and coach. He was strict in both capacities. He went out about nine o'clock at night and chased all the football players home. I remember that because one of them was my boyfriend.
I have at least one classmate left, Bernice Siebert Corley. She lives in Phoenix, Ariz. Neither of us want to travel to see each other so we keep our friendship alive by telephone. Thank you, Alexander Graham Bell! We don't do e-mail.
