Random Thoughts: Thoughts on changing times
Every year I watch the Kentucky Derby. So, Saturday I plopped myself down in front of the TV to watch the historic event.
I like to tune in early to see all the beautiful horses and the ladies with their big, fancy hats. The only thing missing was the mint julep.
I have stood on that race track, but not on Derby Day. As I stood there, I could imagine the sleek and shining horses, the band, the singing of "My Old Kentucky Home," and the crowds gathered there. I could see the jockeys wearing the colors of the horse's owner. While there, I bought a souvenir glass on which all the names of the horses who had won the race since the beginning of the Derby were printed.
After seeing the race Saturday, I learned that my great-granddaughter Amanda (who teaches in Nashville, Tenn.) and a girl friend attended the race. They had bought big, floppy hats to wear, so as to get the full flavor of the occasion.
Believe me, if I could have, I would have been right there with them. Ever since I read the book, "Seabiscuit," which gave the background of horse racing, I have been more aware of the whole system.
Peabody has a race track in their park and a once famous horse ran there.
Isn't Marion beautiful this spring! Flowers are blooming everywhere. Credit must be given to the volunteers who care for the flowers at the library, Central Park, and maybe other places. And, of course, people who do the same in their yards for our benefit.
Mother Nature gives and Mother Nature takes away. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to those people who have lost so much in the terrible tornadoes.
