Regular season ends with quadrangular sweep
Centre High School volleyball team topped .500 Oct. 12 with three wins at a quadrangular at Bennington. Their record heading into the Eisenhower League tournament Saturday at Wakefield stood at 12 wins, 11 losses.
The three wins gave the Lady Cougars third seed in the 1A regional tournament held yesterday at Centre. Hope, at 24-4, was top-seed followed by White City, second-seed at 20-5.
In the first match at Bennington, the girls defeated St. John's of Beloit in two games, 25-8 and 27-25.
The girls were almost perfect from the serving line, missing one of 51 altogether. Jill Fenske and Alisha Barney served for seven points each, followed by Jackie Klenda with six, and Kylie Burhoop five.
Individual aces included two each by Burhoop, Klenda, Barney, and Fenske, and one by Brianne Stahlecker. A total of 20 rally points were tallied.
Stahlecker set the ball 35 of 36 attempts, five resulting in a kill. Alyssa Luna was a perfect 10-10, four for a kill.
Jill Fenske was strong at the front line, completing 16 of 17 spike attempts and three kills. Klenda executed 14 hits in 18 attempts and two kills. Other hitters were Megan Gutsch 8-9, three kills, two blocks; Barney 7-8, two kills, two blocks; and Luna 3-4, one kill, one block.
The girls won a match with Southern Cloud in two games, 25-22 and 25-15. They were 46-49 at the serving line.
Fenske was credited with nine service points, followed by Barney eight, Selena Seifert six, Klenda four, and Burhoop and Luna one each.
Barney produced three aces. Klenda and Fenske contributed one ace each. The team tallied 21 rally points.
Stahlecker was 35-37 in setting, seven for a kill; Luna 12-12, one for a kill.
Fenske led hitting with a perfect 17-17 in spike attempts. She also contributed three kills.
Other hitters included Gutsch 7-10, two blocks; Luna 8-8, one kill; Burhoop 6-7, one kill, two blocks; Klenda 11-13, five kills; Barney 4-7, one kill.
In match three, Centre defeated Bennington in two games, 25-19 and 25-17. Team serving was 24-25 in game one and 20-24 in game two.
The setters were perfect, Stahlecker 26-26, 11 resulting in kills, and Luna 13-13, one for a kill.
Total service points included Stahlecker, eight; Klenda and Fenske, six each; Luna, four; Seifert and Barney, two each; and Burhoop and Teaira Turner, one each.
Fenske aced the ball four times, followed by Klenda three, Seifert two, and Stahlecker one. Rally points totaled 20.
Barney and Fenske were equally strong at the front line, completing 11 of 14 spike attempts. Barney executed six kills, Fenske three.
Other hitters were Klenda 6-9, three kills; Luna 3-3, two kills; Gutsch 6-9, two kills, three blocks; Turner 1-3.
The junior varsity lost the match with Southern Cloud by identical scores of 16-21. They went on to defeat Bennington in three, 17-21, 21-8, 21-17, and St. John's in two, 21-12, 21-15.
