Robert Turner
Robert V. "Bob" Turner, 78, of Marion, died Oct. 9, 2006, at his home.
Born Aug. 2, 1928, in Marion, he was the son of Ira W. and Helen (Oyer) Turner. He grew up in Marion and graduated from Marion High School in 1946. Bob was an accomplished trumpet player and played Taps for fallen soldiers of World War II who were buried in Marion.
He met Frances Walsh at a roller rink in Manhattan and they married July 29, 1951, in Marion.
Bob worked as a meat cutter at various grocery stores including Howard's Foodliner, Wichita; Moore's IGA, Newton; and Florence grocery store. He worked at Quality Market in Marion as a produce manager.
He referred to himself as a "flashlight farmer" because he would work during the day and do farm work after he returned home. His family was his number one priority.
He was an avid gardener and roller skater, always taking time to teach others how to skate. He was a past member of the Society for Preservation of Barber Shop Quartet Singing of America. He was a member of Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Frances, of the home; two sons, A.J. and wife Jalene of Emporia and Bill of Lincolnville; daughter Sandy Sloan and husband Jim of Willow Springs, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Oct. 12, 2006, at Eastmoor United Methodist Church with the Reverend Mike Eurit officiating. Interment was in Marion Cemetery.
