Ruth Hiebert was in class of 1923 years ago
How does one hold a class reunion when only one member remains? And how does a 98-year-old woman have the energy to ride in the Old Settlers' Day parade and walk across the stage at Central Park?
That was the dilemma Ruth (Buckley) Hiebert of Marion Manor faced over the weekend. Her class, the class of 1923, would have celebrated its 80th anniversary.
Hiebert said, as far as she knows, she is the only surviving member.
Hiebert's parents operated Buckley's Grocery store in downtown Marion. She and her sister worked in the store while they were growing up. Later the two sisters and their husbands operated the store. It was sold in 1972 after 50 years in business.
Hiebert's husband, Alfred, died in 1972. Her sister also has died. Hiebert has lived at Marion Manor for two years but occasionally gets to visit her home in Marion when family members come to visit.
Despite her age, Hiebert has a keen mind and good memory. She keeps up-to-speed on world events by watching TV newscasts. She also enjoys some sports, and is a big fan of KU basketball. She was excited to hear about recent wins by the KU football team.
She loves to read and takes every opportunity to visit Marion Library. She said she appreciates the transportation provided by Marion Senior Center for visits to the doctor and for other appointments.
Hiebert has one son, Bob, who lives in Columbia, Mo. She has two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
