The Sacred Heart scoring duo of Steph Wittman and Shannon Berchard accounted for 57 of the Knights' 66 points in the six-point win Saturday over the Marion High School girls' basketball team, erasing Warrior thoughts of a final Cottonwood Valley League crown. The Warriors fell to Sacred Heart, 66-60 in a rescheduled game at home, and likely ended their chances of stealing the final CVL title.
In the first quarter, the Warriors and Knights battled back and forth, to find themselves separated by one point — 17-16 in favor of Sacred Heart.
In the second quarter, the Warriors battled ahead and outscored the Knights by two to close out the quarter. Despite Whitman and Berchard scoring all of Sacred Heart's 31 first-half points, the Warriors took a one-point lead heading into the locker room at intermission behind Brandi Peterie-Shipman's 16-point first half performance.
The Warriors came out firing in the third quarter, extending their lead to as many as three, but the second half belonged to the Knights, who fired back into the game, outscoring the Warriors 19-14 in the third quarter and 16-14 in the fourth to come away with the six-point lead. Marion tied the game up at the beginning of the fourth quarter after Sacred Heart's 11-2 third-quarter run, but the Knights were too tough in the waning moments of the game.
Marion's Peterie-Shipman finished with a team-high 22 points, while Caitlin O'Dell and Toni Gordon had 12 and eight points, respectively.
Wichita Independent
Behind a strong post game, the Marion Warriors basketball team cruised to a 66-55 win Feb. 10 over Wichita Independent in Wichita.
Brandi Peterie-Shipman and Toni Gordon combined to score 36 of their teams' 66 points en route to their second win over the Panthers.
The Warriors jumped out on the Panthers early and didn't look back. Marion outscored Independent 23-16 in the first quarter and 16-7 in the second quarter to take a 39-23 advantage prior to halftime.
In the third and fourth quarters, the Panthers clawed back into the game outscoring the Warriors 33-26 in the last two periods of play. Despite the late surge, Marion strolled away with the 11-point victory.
The Warriors shot 47 percent from the field for the game and 25 percent from behind the three-point line.
Peterie-Shipman finished with 22 points to lead all scorers, while pulling down four rebounds, dishing out two assists, and grabbing a steal. Gordon finished with 14 points, six rebounds and two assists in the win. Caitlin O'Dell and Amy Tajchman had nine and eight points, respectively.
