Sale, discharge of fireworks approved for county

Marion County residents again will be allowed to sell, purchase, and discharge fireworks in Marion County.
A resolution was approved Monday by Marion County Commission which was the same as the previous year.
Retail sales of fireworks in the county will be allowed from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. from June 27 through July 6. The stands can remain open until midnight on July 4.
The discharging of fireworks will be allowed from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., July 1-3, and from 8 a.m. to midnight, July 4.
An application fee of $50 for retail sales will be imposed with a $500 performance bond.
In other business:
— A 1960 Case tractor with a loader and blade attracted 11 bidders with Don Doty of Emporia submitting the high bid of $3,503.
The bids ranged from $665 to the high bid amount.
— The commission approved the purchase of a server for the county's health department.
Great Plains Computers and Networking of Marion had the low bid of $2,420. Dell submitted a bid of $2,471, and Gateway presented two bids — $2,433 and $2,764, respectively.
Funds will be taken from the department's capital outlay.
— County clerk Carol Maggard reported more than a dozen, 65-gallon bins of outdated files and records were shredded. All county departments participated in the commercial shredding Friday, with more shredding anticipated. The typical charge from Absolute Shred of Kansas is $32 per bin but Maggard said it may be less since it was a larger job.
— The commission canvassed a special bond election held June 5 for voters in USD 410. There were 17 provisional ballots with the final tally being 469 voting for the bond issue and 413 voting against.
— Maggard reported a new mandate will require training for all new sheriffs who are elected in 2008. The commission will require the training costs to be in the sheriff's budget for 2008.
— Budget meetings are scheduled for department heads and the county's auditors. Department heads are asked to keep their budgets the same as this year with the possibility of a reduction to allow for up to a three percent merit raise for employees.
— The commission had two, five-minute executive session to discuss personnel. No decisions were made.
— Interviews were conducted by the commission for the county lake superintendent position. An offer has been made to an applicant.
The next commission meeting is at 9 a.m. Monday in the courthouse.
