Sassy senior moments: Volunteers honored at senior center

We are in the middle of National Volunteer Week as this is written. The Marion County Department for Elderly honored transportation drivers and the crew who assembles the newsletter.
Virginia Downing recognized the Wednesday FISH drivers. They are in-town transportation providers, available Tuesdays and Fridays. The program began through local churches. There now are only three churches represented by five drivers. They are Bob Echtenacher, Prudy Hanson, Connie Fisher, Erna Mae Yeagley, and Jean Pierce.
The WALK Kansas team attended a special cooking school provided by Nancy Pihl. She prepared healthy food items for us to eat. As of this past week our team was 11 out of 38 teams in the number of miles reported.
Henrietta Waner and I attended training Friday at Manhattan. We were told a senior center nutrition site is not a restaurant, even though Henrietta does her best to please everyone.
We had more adventure than we planned when we along with Betty Gayle of Hillsboro and Arlene Unruh of Peabody were dropped off at the Manhattan library by our van driver, Leonard Klassen. He went on his way with instruction to come back for us mid-afternoon. At the meeting we were told some of us would go to the Area Agency on Aging office and depart from there. We had no way to let Leonard know, so we were resourceful, did some walking, and came home intact.
Herb Jackson brought treats for his birthday Tuesday and actually asked to wear the birthday hat.
We discovered Wednesday was Bob Echtenacher's birthday. He didn't care for the hat but we sang to him. The program was given by David Coffman of Zeiner Funeral Home and Melinda Kadel. They spoke on pre-planning for one's funeral.
Come join us May 10 when Max Dunn will give a musical program.
