School board approves roof bids

Following a rainy week in Marion County and a soggy one at Marion Elementary School, the Marion-Florence USD 408 Board of Education voted Monday to accept bids to place a new roof on the east wing of the school.

The wing, which is dotted with skylights, has been plagued with leak problems for quite some time.

During a special noon meeting, the board accepted bids totaling $268,792 from five different contractors to replace the roof, according to Martin Tice, USD 408 business manager.

The board approved a bid of $153,700 plus $21,100 for 12 inches of insulation from Alert Roofing; a bid of $8,775 for a new kitchen roof from Martin Roofing; a mechanic bid of $45,717 from Fleming; an electrical bid of $12,850 from Harm's Electric; and an awning bid of $6,650 from Arning's Awnings. The cities where the contractors originate was unavailable.

The $268,000-plus number also included a $5,000 contingency fee, and $15,000 in architect fees, Tice said.

In other matters, the board:

— approved ticket charges for general admission and dinner theater admission for the Marion High School spring play.

— voted to approve the candidacy of Ken Arnhold, Marion High School principal, for the Kansas State High School Activities Association appeal board.
