School board approves storage building lease

Discussion of future leases with the Saddle Club was discussed Monday by USD #408 board of education.

The November to October lease costs the district $3,600 per year. The building is used by the district for storage of mowing and track equipment, and a bus.

Marion High School Principal Ken Arnhold said he was considering a project for the carpentry class to construct a building behind the visitors bleachers at Warrior Stadium. The building could be used for track and football equipment.

The board approved the lease for another year with the anticipation of not needing the facility next year.

— A letter of intent between the City of Marion and the school district was reviewed and approved by the board with minor changes.

The agreement would require the city to pay $100,000 per year for 18 years as a bond payment.

— Drew Looper has been hired as assistant MHS wrestling coach.

— Performing arts students will travel to New York City June 29 through July 1, 2007, to attend acting workshops, sight-see, and attend two Broadway shows.

There is room for 54 people. So far 28 students and 14 adults have signed up, said sponsor Janet Killough. The cost is $848 per person but if more people go, the cost will be less.

Killough said students will raise money through local efforts that will not involve door-to-door sales or through a company.

The district will provide transportation to and from Kansas City International Airport.

— The board approved five members of FCCLA to attend a national conference in St. Louis. The district will provide transportation to and from McPherson, where the group will board a charter bus for the trip.
