Schwartzes to host open house

Tradition, humor, and animation are features of the Christmas décor at the home of Richard and Marg Schwartz, 4 Hill Road, Marion County Lake.

The Schwartzes invite Marion County Lake homeowners, families, and friends to an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 14.

Culminating this holiday festivity at 6 p.m. will be a hayrack/car caravan tour on Lakeshore Drive to view Christmas lighting. Those who participate in this event are asked to gather at the parking area west of the Schwartz home. After the tour, the holiday revelers will enjoy hot drinks and the hospitality in the Schwartz home.

Guests at the open house will enjoy the innovative village surrounded by a train track with a working model. The village includes a Main Street, park, homes, and uniquely clever figures of town's people. Collecting, painting, and enhancing The Village is Marg's tribute to the Christmas traditions her mother, Sadie Bernhardt, established in their Marion home.

Theme decorations are Christmas trees adorned with ornaments that are mobile, lighted, and humorous. For 20 years, the Schwartz family has developed an eclectic collection of ornaments that adorn the trees. One tree is dedicated to Wizard of Oz ornaments, another to Disney and Looney tune cartoons. The goose feather tree, not an attractive tree, is a reflection of the importance of heritage and tradition. Goose feather trees reveal the resourcefulness of pioneer women living on the treeless plains.
