Senior citizens meet at Tampa

Sunflower Senior Citizens held their first meeting Sept. 10 after the summer hiatus. They met at the senior center with 18 members and three guests present. Eleanor Murphy and Magdalen Dvorak were hostesses. The group enjoyed a potluck dinner and played card bingo.

The American Legion Auxiliary met Sept. 9 at the Legion hall with Amy and Kathy Rehmert as hostesses. Others present were Bonnie Crandall, Margaret Vinduska, Dee Duggan, Beryl Steiner, Bonnie Funk, Maxine Mueller, and Ruby Vinduska. The group made plans for a flea market at the hall Oct. 19. Anyone wishing to rent space can call Dee Duggan at 785-965-7170.

Martha Melcher, Eleanor Murphy, Helen Schwartzman, and Tillie Hein attended a card party in Herington Sunday evening.

Georgia Spohn accompanied Gary and Carole Spohn to Salina Sunday afternoon, then to Abilene for supper in celebration of Georgia's birthday which was Friday.

Carl and Kathy Hubbard and Clint of Wellington were weekend guests of her mother, Adeline Bernhardt. All visited Milda Krauter Saturday evening at Marion Manor. On Sunday, they met Jennifer Rusk of Fort Gibson, Okla., and Dee Anna Stout of Wichita in Salina for dinner. In the afternoon, the women attended a layette shower for Dee Anna Stout and Rhonda McIntyre.

Jerry and Jeanne Rziha, Cecilia and Julie and Dana Depo took Susie Rziha to Wichita Sunday. Jim and Diane Herron and Andrew and Francis and Mary Jirak and Kristine met them at the Immaculate Heart of Mary convent where Susie will become a postulant. The sisters had a reception for them and a time of prayer.

Pastor Clark Davis conducted services Sunday afternoon at Hillsboro Community Medical Center's long-term care unit and Parkside Homes in Hillsboro. Joining with the members of St. John's Lutheran Church and other residents in singing hymns were Evelyn Hensley, Shirley Hein, Joyce Medley, Dennis Klein, and Leona Kleiber.

Among those attending a birthday party for Sara Houdyshell Sunday afternoon at the home of her parents, Roy and Judy Houdyshell, were Bev and Tom Reid of Marion, Mike and Jennifer Jay of Hillsboro, Paul and Edna Backhus, Brad and Kathy Backhus, and Jason Backhus.

John and Pat Schwartzman of Salina were Sunday dinner guests of Helen Schwartzman.

Tom and Dee Duggan spent the weekend with Ernie and Darlene Kite of Bartlesville, Okla. Dee and Darlene's brother, Ernie Bonham, of Tyro, joined them on Sunday.

Julie Rziha earned a purple ribbon Saturday on her demonstration at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.

Leona Kleiber attended the Centre invitational volleyball tournament Saturday at Centre High School. Her granddaughter, Amanda Kleiber, was one of the players. Also in Amanda's cheering section were her parents and brother, Lynn and Peggy Kleiber and Nicholas.

Greg Sklenar of Wichita was a weekend guest of his mother, Lois Sklenar.

Jack and Sharon Grosse of Peabody were Saturday morning coffee guests of Adeline Bernhardt.

Norma and Orlin Wagner of Wichita met her sister, Georgia Spohn, for dinner Friday at Kingfisher's Inn.

The University of Kansas Alumni Association honored outstanding high school seniors from Marion, McPherson, and Rice counties Sept. 11 with a banquet for them and their parents at McPherson. The featured speaker was the dean of the KU School of Pharmacy. Centre students and parents attending were Derek, Ed, and Gwenn Belton, Cecilia, Jerry, and Jeanne Rziha, and Danielle, Norman, and Carla Engler.

Paul and Edna Backhus attended the state fair Wednesday at Hutchinson.

Lenora Graham of Florence and Georgia Spohn enjoyed dinner in Newton Wednesday as an early celebration of Georgia's birthday.

Leona Kleiber and Adeline Bernhardt visited Milda Krauter Wednesday at Marion Manor.

Visitors of Helen Schwartzman on Labor Day evening were Eleanor Murphy, Martha Melcher, and Jim and Mary Clemmer.

Lori Moldenhauer was the organ accompanist for the wedding of Rachel Collett and Bevan Herpich Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Herington.

Tom and Lori Moldenhauer and Nikki, Ronnie and Lisa Hanschu, James and Anna, and Frank and Anna Mae Stika attended the annual reunion of Fred and Mary Schneider descendants Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran parish hall in Herington.

Nikki Stenzel attended the K-State football game in Manhattan Saturday. She played in the junior high band.
