Senior citizens sell peppernuts
A group of senior citizens spent several hours Friday baking and packaging peppernuts at Marion Senior Center.
Cook Henrietta Waner prepared the dough Friday morning and put it in the refrigerator to chill. She said she made four large batches, each requiring 17 cups of flour.
In assembly line fashion that afternoon, some rolled the dough into long ropes, others cut it in small pieces and placed them on cookie sheets. Then, as they came from the oven, the cookies were packaged and weighed.
The traditional German holiday treats are being sold as a fundraiser for the center — $5.50 a pound or $2.75 a half-pound. They are available in anise flavor or plain.
The cookies can be purchased weekdays at the senior center.
