Shame on the Jayhawk
Kansans are rightfully proud of their Jayhawk basketball team. Coach Roy Williams and his boys have been establishing a remarkable record on the hardwoods.
As proud as we are of our team, we also are ashamed of the fact that proper respect is not shown for Old Glory prior to games at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence.
The Athletics Department has canceled the traditional ROTC flag ceremony which normally precedes each game.
The reason given is that the cadets and midshipmen who present the flag sometimes disrupt the game schedule by as much as 45 seconds.
This delay upsets the television schedule and spoils the coaching staff's pregame pep talk.
The University Daily Kansan said the Athletics Department will make a patriotic gesture by shining a spotlight at a flag on the fieldhouse wall.
Old Glory deserves better than that. Let's continue to cheer for the Jayhawks, but with proper respect for the colors — not just red and blue but all three, red, white, and blue.
